Sunday Music in the Lodge Starting in August, there will be Sunday music in the lounge. Two separate bands will have a closed jam/practice on the (generally) second and fourth Sundays of each month from 2pm to 6pm. Due to scheduling conflicts (Lodge events, holidays, etc) days may vary, so keep an eye out in the current month's Gatepost calendar for dates. ~ Band With No Name ~ This band is scheduled to play the second Sunday of each month. They play intricate instrumental music spanning four centuries and ranging from folk, to Irish, to bluegrass, to classical, to rock -- sometime in combination. It is pure listening joy to the instrumental music aficianado. The 'first' performance is scheduled for August 12th. ~ DyssBand ~ The band is scheduled to play the fourth Sunday of each month. They tend more towards two and three-part harmony vocals -- playing mostly fold and acoustic rock from the 1950's to present day, with heavy emphasis on 60's and 70's classic rock and blues tunes along with several originals in these styles. Some song just plain scream for audience participation, so break out your dashiki and bell-bottoms and come on down! Their next performance is scheduled for August 26th. While under the banner of practice/jam, these bands actually perform at small venues and events. These sessions allow the bands to put some extra polish on their tunes while providing free entertainment on an otherwise slow day in the lounge. Beware though, the occasional jam-run-amok may ensue -- generally accompanied by big, stupid grins on the faces of the musicians and clapping from the audience. Guest musicians are by invitation only, with arrangements made well in advance with the individual bands. |
Monday Afternoon We have 276 hats as of the end of February 2013. The ladies at our social make beautiful items. I am so pleased at all the hard work and the determination to learn more. I actually look forward to Monday afternoons at the Elks Lodge! A recent attendee from the Milwaukie Elks Lodge is a tatter. Anyone want to learn tatting? Our Knitting Social roster has grown so much that the one page report of hours and miles is not sufficient. We will soon be dividing it into two full pages with one side being East and the flip side being North East. (I can hear you laughing! You know who you are! The Gateway Elks Lodge knitting social provides yarn to those that wish to help with making the hats that get donated to Doernbecher Children's Hospital. We also accept donations of yarn here too. If you are interested in attending this knitting social just to learn to knit or crochet, we do that too! We even have a collection of easy knitting and crocheting patterns that you can borrow. All we ask is that you bring your own knitting/crocheting tools…as those we do not supply. You also are not required to make hats at this knitting social. You are very welcome to work on your own projects. For more information please call Mary Gast at Donations of acrylic or cotton yarn and fleece fabric is greatly appreciated. You don't have to be an Elk or an Elkette to attend. Anyone may attend and all are encouraged to bring friends along as guests. There are no fees for this social and you may bring your own projects. Beginners are always welcome! Help with knitting and crocheting is available. Donations of acrylic or cotton yarn and fleece fabric is greatly appreciated.

Welcome
Quilters! Over the past few months, we have begun to piece together a group of quilters at the lodge. We meet every Tuesday in the upper dinning room area and are looking for more interested individuals to join us! We work on both charity quilts and our own projects. Don't know how to sew? No problem. We have many experienced members who can help you. Hands no up to cutting the fabric? Again, we have people who can help you with that. In December, the Veterans handed out 17 quilts that the group had finished at their Vancouver Hospital Vets Christmas party. We have lots more in the works and could use some help getting quilts done for the Elks Eye Clinic. We are still in need of a couple of older sewing machines, so we don't need to bring the ones from home. Those old Singers and Kenmores (the really heavy ones) hiding in the back of your closet are great for piecing quilts. Drop by any Tuesday from 11-3. We would love to show you what we are working on. Grab some lunch while you are here, the kitchen is open on Tuesdays! Nancy Goldsworthy Quilting Coordinator PS: Raffle Quilt Winner Goes Home Warm! We drew the ticket for our Christmas raffle quilt at the members Turkey Shoot on November 15th. The lucky winner was Ginny Stewart. She was wrapped up in the quilt before we had it down off the rack! The quilt raised $271 toward the Christmas baskets. Thanks to all who participated. Nancy Goldsworthy |
